Badger Cottage: A Suffolk Holiday Hideaway

Many of our campsite guests don’t know about Badger Cottage (& vice versa.)  If you’re a fan of our campsite & looking for a beautiful winter retreat; our self-catering holiday cottage is open all year round. Read on for a tour of the cottage or head to our bookings page to check availability.

Our Suffolk Holiday Retreat

In the charmingly quaint village of Sweffling (near to Framlingham) in Suffolk nestles Badger Cottage.  So named because for every night the Suffolk holiday cottage is occupied we make a donation to The Suffolk Wildlife Trust who protect the natural habitat of wild animals like badgers.

If you’re looking for places to stay in Suffolk with character, beautiful surroundings and a homely feel; Badger Cottage is for you.  If you’re looking for a holiday cottage in Suffolk with close links to the coast where sustainability is King; Badger Cottage is most definitely for you!

Perfect Location

Badger Cottage is in the heart of Suffolk yet only 20mins from coastal towns of Aldeburgh & Southwold. It offers a unique blend of rustic charm, mod cons & quirky facilities.

Totally self-contained – yet guests are only steps away from an award-winning, quiet  real ale pub & a tiny eco campsite with ducks & chickens; a campfire & quirky facilities including pizza oven and jungle shower.

Step inside

This converted 200-year-old red brick stable is perfect for couples, friends and families. Two totally separate galleried bedrooms (accessed via separate staircases) allow guests to relax together or spend time apart.

The cottage is insulated to keep it pleasantly cool in the summer and toasty in the winter.  With strong ec0-credentials this holiday cottage is heated radiators fed from a wood-fired range in the main pub building, and also has a woodburning stove in the living room for extra heat & cosy ambiance.  There are also electric heaters (our electricity supply is from a 100% renewable source) so you can top up the heat if you would like to. The wood-fired heating system also provides plenty of piping hot water on tap for deep soaks in the roll-top bath. During summer months the cottage’s hot water is supplied by a solar powered system (with an electric back-up for less sunny days).

The cottage has a country farmhouse style kitchen and eating area.  The double doors give access to a small private courtyard surrounded by woven hazel fencing, with a table and chairs for sitting or eating outside.

The kitchen has recently been fully refurbished – but in true Alde Garden style we didn’t buy new kitchen units. In fact, the only new thing in the kitchen is the cupboard doors – which were handmade by a local craftsman using locally grown ash wood. There’s replacement crockery, cutlery, glasses and dishwasher – all very good quality second hand items to give the kitchen a lovely fresh feel. There’s also a replacement table – the same craftsman who made the cupboard doors also restored a lovely old farmhouse table for us, and added a cutlery drawer too. Badger Cottage is lovingly restored & decorated to create a low-impact holiday cottage. Renovations used environmentally friendly paints and other natural building materials such as lime, and re-using reclaimed materials as far as possible. Most of the furniture and fittings are either recycled, hand-made from reclaimed materials or sourced locally. Solar panels heat the water for the bath, and all lights have low energy light bulbs – and a lovely big water butt takes rain from the roof to water the plants. Open All Year Round

While Alde Garden Campsite is a perfect summer stay; it is closed during winter for maintenance & to allow the garden time to recover.  Badger Cottage is happily open all year round & a perfect cosy stay for anyone wanting a little bit of eco-luxury in a rural Suffolk setting.
